University Libraries Offers Lectures on Chicano Literary History

University Libraries will feature Dr. Felipe de Ortego y Gasca, a man who is considered the founder of Chicano literary history, as a guest lecturer on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 at 4 p.m. in the Willard Reading Room of Zimmerman Library.

His lecture is titled “El Espejo y El Imagen: Reflections on Chicano Literature – How We Got Here from There.” He will also hold an informal discussion on Chicano literature on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 from 10 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in the Willard Reading Room of Zimmerman.

Ortego y Gasca is a professor emeritus of English Language and Literature at Sul Ross University in Texas. He is also a visiting scholar and lecturer in English at Texas A & M University – Kingsville. He is regarded as one of the most persuasive American Hispanic social and literary critics. In 1969 he taught the first course in Chicano literature in the country at the University of New Mexico
