University of New Mexico Libraries Searching for Chicano Writers

UNM Libraries is looking for emerging Chicana and Chicano writers who have published fewer than two books for a literary competition. Premío Aztlan is a literary prize first established by Rudolfo and Patricia Anaya, and recently revived by University Libraries.

One thousand dollars will be awarded to a Chicana or Chicano writer for a work of fiction published in the 2005 calendar year. The winner will be expected to give a reading at the University Libraries during April 2006.

Anaya says he and his wife started the prize as a way to nurture novice writers. When he began publishing fiction in New Mexico, Anaya won a literary award that encouraged him to keep writing. He says, “So many times, writers after one or two books give up, because they think no one appreciates their work.”

Publishers should submit a letter of nomination and authors should submit a letter of interest and resume to:
