ACOMA POTTERY DEMONSTRATION AT THE MAXWELL MUSEUM, OCT. 29

The Maxwell Museum of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico presents Emma Lewis Mitchell and Dolores Lewis Garcia in the Arts & Crafts from Around the World series. The artists will demonstrate traditional Pueblo pottery making, Oct. 29, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the museum gallery. The event is free and open to the public.

Mitchell and Garcia are the daughters of the famous Acoma matriarch, Lucy M. Lewis. They have been active potters since 1952, working with Mimbres and Anasazi revival black-on-white and polychrome ollas, jars, bowls, seed pots plates and owls. Both women are dedicated to using authentic processes and techniques traditional to Acoma potters for centuries. Mitchell loves working with the Mimbres designs and feels she has a spiritual connection with them. Garcia greatest inspiration is from the ancient people.

Both potters have showed at the Santa Fe Indian Market since 1960 and have won many first place awards during four decades of participation. They travel extensively throughout the United States to teach traditional pottery making and design.

Mitchell and Garcia's work are in major institutions and private collections including the Heard Museum, Harvard's Wright Collection at the Peabody Museum, the Brooklyn Museum of Arts and the Maxwell Museum.

The Albuquerque Urban Enhancement Trust Fund and the Maxwell Museum provide funding for the demonstration.
