UNM ORGANIZATIONS LIST SEPT. 11 COMMEMORATION EVENTS
A number of University of New Mexico departments and organizations have
announced activities they are planning to commemorate Sept. 11, 2001.
The Associated Students of UNM, with assistance from the UNM Student Activities
Center, is working to coordinate campus 9/11 activities.
"I feel that Sept. 11 is a date that needs to be commemorated because
it was an immensely tragic time for our country. This tragedy has shaped
the way Americans feel about their country and the way they treat their
fellow citizens. I hope the UNM community will commemorate according to
their own beliefs and sentiments to remember this historic day,"
said ASUNM President Jennifer Onuska.
ASUNM Student Special Events will sponsor a candlelight commemoration
at the Duck Pond at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 11, that will include
speakers and singing.
The UNM Alumni Relations Office said the Alumni Memorial Chapel will be
open Sept. 11, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., to members of the UNM community
seeking a quiet place to contemplate and reflect on the impact and events
of Sept. 11, 2001.
Debbie Morris, director of the UNM Student Activities, said a number of
campus organizations have announced specific plans to commemorate 9/11
and some groups are still finalizing their efforts. Other UNM organizations
that have thus far announced their activities include:
--ASUNM's Student Special Events will present a noontime concert featuring
the Abraham Franck Quartet from noon to 1 p.m. near the UNM Duck Pond/cactus
garden area.
--The University Honors Program will display student artwork, poetry,
essays and other expressions of thoughts and feelings in the University
Honors Forum, University College Bldg. Interested students should submit
work to the program's office or e-mail the Honors Student Advisory Council,
hsac@unm.edu .
--KNME-TV (PBS, Ch. 5) will present "Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero"
at 7 p.m. The program is described as "an exploration of the many
spiritual questions that have come out of the terror, pain and destruction
of Sept. 11." At 9 p.m. the station will broadcast a performance
of Verdi's Requiem in Requiem for Sept. 11 by the New Jersey Symphony
Orchestra and the Westminster Choir.
--KUNM Radio, 89.9 FM, will air a special broadcast, "Understanding
America after 9/11," from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. It will feature "diverse
voices from around campus and around the globe."
--UNM fraternities and sororities will hold a vigil beginning at 6:30
a.m. on Mesa Vista Road NE, with a moment of silence scheduled for 6:46
a.m. There will be a reading of the names of the fraternity and sorority
members lost due to the events of 9/11.
--The Women Studies Program, Mesa Vista Hall, rm. 2135, will be compiling
a "Women Studies Commemorative Book" from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.,
in which members of the UNM community may express their thoughts "in
a quiet, safe environment" and anonymously if they prefer.
--The Student Health Center will sponsor a bulletin board display commemorating
9/11.
-- To commemorate the loss of life, the Masley Art Gallery in the art
education building will host an opening reception for the exhibit "5,000
Flowers," Sept. 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. The artwork is by faculty, staff
and students in the UNM College of Education. The exhibit will run from
Sept. 5-27. Regular gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday.
--The Aquinas Newman Center, 1815 Las Lomas Blvd. NE, will hold a Liturgy/Mass
at 12:10 p.m. and "An Evening Prayer for the Dead" at 7 p.m.
and will toll the chapel bell at 8:45, 9:03 9:43 and 10 a.m.
--The Lutheran Campus Ministry, 1805 Las Lomas NE, will open the Luther
House Chapel from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for silent prayer and reflection.
--The Latter-day Saint Student Association will hold a Sept. 11 Devotional
from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint
Institute of Religion, 1601 Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave.
--The Lutheran Student Movement, the Aquinas Newman Community, Canterbury
Episcopal Campus Ministry, Presbyterian Student Fellowship and Hillel,
the Jewish Community at UNM, will sponsor a Multi-Faith Prayer Vigil,
"Prayers of Justice and Peace." It will take place from 9:30
a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the lawn northwest of Zimmerman Library. UNM community
members are invited to bring a prayer or a short reading.
--The Christian Student Center, 130 Girard NE, will host "Peak of
the Week" at 7 p.m. to remember the events of Sept. 11 "by looking
in-depth at the book of Proverbs and reflecting on God's will for our
lives."
--The UNM School of Law Veteran's Association will sponsor a talk on "America"
by UNM Regent Richard Toliver at 11:30 a.m. in room 2402 in Bratton Hall.
There will also be a UNM connection at the City of Albuquerque's Sept.
11 commemoration ceremony. Dr. Paul Roth, dean of the UNM School of Medicine,
has been invited to sit on the dais for the noon event on Civic Plaza.
Roth is the commander of the New Mexico Disaster Medical Assistance Team
(DMAT) and will represent the more than 20 members who were deployed to
Ground Zero in New York City to provide medical care for the recovery
workers.
In addition, UNM Hospitals' Lifeguard helicopter is scheduled to close
the Civic Plaza ceremony with a flyover to represent the rescue forces
that took part in post-Sept. 11 actives.
