OPEN FORUMS SET FOR UNM OEO DIRECTOR FINALISTS
Open forums have been scheduled for four finalists for the position of
director of the University of New Mexico's Office of Equal Opportunity
(OEO).
The four were identified by a 13-member committee in a national search
that began last March. "The committee has done a commendable job
in identifying four excellent candidates, all with very strong credentials.
I'm very pleased with the quality of this pool of finalists for this very
important position at UNM," said UNM President F. Chris Garcia.
Among other duties, the UNM OEO director develops and implements comprehensive
equal opportunity and affirmative action plans for the University and
ensures UNM's compliance with all local, state and federal civil rights
laws and regulations. The individual selected will succeed OEO Interim
Director Theresa Ramos, who has served in that capacity for about a year
following the retirement of previous director Anne Thomas.
The four finalists and the dates of their respective open forums, all
of which will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Roberts Room, Scholes Hall,
include:
--Thomasine P. Ross, whose open forum is scheduled for Thursday, Sept.
5, has served as civil rights coordinator in the Civil Rights Division
of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services
since August of 1998. Ross previously served as senior OEO investigator
with UNM's OEO from 1992-98. In 1991, she was labor relations manager
in UNM's Human Resources Department, where she also previously served
as senior human resources representative from 1989-91 and as a classification/compensation
analyst from 1985-87. She also held various positions in Albuquerque
and Oregon. Ross earned her Bachelor of University Studies degree from
UNM in 1974 and her Juris Doctorate, also from UNM, in 1979.
--Annazette Fields, whose open forum is scheduled for Thursday, Sept.
19, has served as director of Equal Opportunity at Murray State University,
Murray, Ky., since 1993. She previously held various other positions
at Murray State including adjunct instructor in the College of Business
and Public Affairs, 1993-96; assistant director, Career Services, 1993;
and, coordinator, Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority Work-Study
Program, 1992. Fields earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Langston
University, Okla., in 1983; her Master of Science degree from Murray
State University in 1993; and is working towards her Ph.D. in Educational
Policy Studies and Evaluation at the University of Kentucky.
--Elva Telles, whose open forum is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 26,
has served as EEO/ADA and Employee Relations director at New Mexico
State University since 1978. At NMSU, she also served as associate personnel
director for a period of two years and five months; as assistant to
the director for Personnel for two years and seven months; and, as an
administrative assistant to the business manager for a period of aboutone
year and four months. Telles earned her Bachelor of Business Administration
degree in 1973 and her Master of Arts degree in Counseling and Educational
Psychology in 1989, both from NMSU.
--Doralia Martinez Freudiger, whose open forum is scheduled for Thursday,
Oct. 3, has served as the deputy director of the Equal Employment Opportunity
Staff for the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., since
1994. In addition to her current position, she has served as a senior
EEO Program Manager in various federal agencies where she has had responsibility
for programs serving Hispanic, women, Asian Pacific American and American
Indian affirmative employment concerns. Early in her career she worked
in the Washington, D.C., community as a professional social worker.
Freudiger earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of
Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras in 1969 and her Master of Social Work degree
from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., in 1971.
