August 19, 2002 CHICKASAW LANGUAGE PRESENTATION OFFERED The University of New Mexico Department of Linguistics is sponsoring
a presentation on the Chickasaw language Thursday, Aug. 29 from 4 to 5:30
p.m. in Ortega Hall 335. "Endangered Languages and Linguistic Fieldwork: The Chickasaw Language
of Oklahoma" will be presented by Catherine Willmond, a native Chickasaw
speaker, and Pamela Munro, a linguistics professor at UCLA. Characteristic features of Chickasaw will be presented in the context
of other languages of North America, in a collaborative demonstration
of how linguists learn about language structure, with opportunities for
attendees to participate in finding out more about Chickasaw for themselves.
Willmond and Munro are the authors of "Chickasaw: An Analytical
Dictionary" (University of Oklahoma Press, 1994). The presentation is co-sponsored by the Linguistic Institute for Native Americans. # # # |
