UNM ORGANIZES ANNUAL NEW MEXICO DATA USERS CONFERENCE

The 4th annual New Mexico Data Users Conference has been scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 7:45 a.m. in Ballroom C at the University of New Mexico Continuing Education Conference Center, 1634 University Blvd. N.E.

The conference will provide attendees with background information about various socioeconomic databases, population and economic forecasts, detailed technical methods, and how demographic and economic data are applied in practical situations.

The New Mexico State Data Center/Business and Industry Data Center (SDC/BIDC) Program sponsors the annual event, which is organized by UNM’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER), a coordinator in the New Mexico data center network.

This year’s speakers are from a variety of organizations, including the New Mexico Department of Labor; several UNM departments including BBER, Community and Regional Planning, Earth Data Analysis Center and Division of Government Research; the U.S. Census Bureau; and Keith Kjelstrom Consulting, an associate of the New Mexico Main Street Program.

The agenda includes a plenary session, nine breakout sessions and a luncheon presentation. Topics include a look at Census 2000 socioeconomic data, work force data and details about Department of Labor programs, BBER population projections and forecasting methods, the basics about state and local economic data, decennial census basics, the Census Bureau’s American FactFinder Internet site, how BBER forecasts the New Mexico economy, research methods and skills, geographic information systems and market analysis for downtown revitalization.

Sr. Economist Larry Waldman, of BBER, will be the luncheon speaker, presenting a review of New Mexico’s recent economic performance and a short-term economic outlook.

The annual Data Users Conference has become a valued learning experience for businesses,
government agencies, service organizations and students.

“Last year’s conference evaluations showed that 93 percent or more rated the quality of instruction, subject matter and handouts as good to excellent,” said BBER’s Kevin Kargacin. “Moreover, 96 percent said the conference gave them the tools to better use socioeconomic data.”

Registration for the conference is $40 per person and includes all conference materials, continental breakfast, beverage breaks and a luncheon buffet. For more information and a copy of the registration form go to the BBER website at www.unm.edu/~bber or call (505) 277-8300 or 277-3038.
