UNM ORGANIZES ANNUAL NEW MEXICO DATA USERS CONFERENCE
The 4th annual New Mexico Data Users Conference has been scheduled for
Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 7:45 a.m. in Ballroom C at the University of New
Mexico Continuing Education Conference Center, 1634 University Blvd. N.E.
The conference will provide attendees with background information about
various socioeconomic databases, population and economic forecasts, detailed
technical methods, and how demographic and economic data are applied in
practical situations.
The New Mexico State Data Center/Business and Industry Data Center (SDC/BIDC)
Program sponsors the annual event, which is organized by UNMs Bureau
of Business and Economic Research (BBER), a coordinator in the New Mexico
data center network.
This years speakers are from a variety of organizations, including
the New Mexico Department of Labor; several UNM departments including
BBER, Community and Regional Planning, Earth Data Analysis Center and
Division of Government Research; the U.S. Census Bureau; and Keith Kjelstrom
Consulting, an associate of the New Mexico Main Street Program.
The agenda includes a plenary session, nine breakout sessions and a luncheon
presentation. Topics include a look at Census 2000 socioeconomic data,
work force data and details about Department of Labor programs, BBER population
projections and forecasting methods, the basics about state and local
economic data, decennial census basics, the Census Bureaus American
FactFinder Internet site, how BBER forecasts the New Mexico economy, research
methods and skills, geographic information systems and market analysis
for downtown revitalization.
Sr. Economist Larry Waldman, of BBER, will be the luncheon speaker, presenting
a review of New Mexicos recent economic performance and a short-term
economic outlook.
The annual Data Users Conference has become a valued learning experience
for businesses,
government agencies, service organizations and students.
Last years conference evaluations showed that 93 percent or
more rated the quality of instruction, subject matter and handouts as
good to excellent, said BBERs Kevin Kargacin. Moreover,
96 percent said the conference gave them the tools to better use socioeconomic
data.
Registration for the conference is $40 per person and includes all conference
materials, continental breakfast, beverage breaks and a luncheon buffet.
