ANDERSON SCHOOLS AT UNM TO HOST ECOTOURISM AUTHORITY

The Anderson Schools of Management (ASM) at the University of New Mexico will host Ron Mader, an internationally known authority on ecotourism. Mader, from Oaxaca, Mexico, will conduct two seminars including, “Ecological & Cultural Impacts of Tourism,” on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 8 to 9:15 a.m. in room 1016 at the ASM. This seminar is free and open to the public.

Mader will present his thoughts on how the world can deal with the huge ecological and cultural impacts of more than 625 million tourists who travel internationally each year. His first-hand experiences in Mexico allow him to explain the impacts, both positive and negative, and how to deal with them.

Mader’s second seminar, “How to Set-up and Manage an On-line Conference,” will be held Friday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to noon, in the computer classroom at the ASM. This seminar is also free and open to the public, but reservations must be made in advance by e-mail to ASM Professor Eddie Dry at edry@unm.edu.

“On-line conferencing is especially useful in New Mexico where the long distances between cities make it difficult to bring people together from throughout the state for board meetings, conferencing and conventions,” says Mader. “This hands-on workshop will teach participants how to create their own on-line conferences and forums.”

Mader is the web host of Planeta.com, one of the first sites on the web to focus on ecotourism. He has received numerous awards for his pioneering work. Earlier this year Mader hosted the on-line Sustainable Development of Ecotourism Web Conference organized by the United Nations Environment Program and the World Trade Organization as a preparatory event prior to the World Ecotourism Summit.
