UNM NATIVE AMERICAN STUDIES HOSTS PANEL TO OBSERVE 1OTH ANNIVERSARY OF AWARD-WINNING VIDEO 'SURVIVING COLUMBUS'

On the 10th anniversary of its release, the PBS award-winning video "Surviving Columbus" will be presented and discussed at the All Indian Pueblo Cultural Center Thursday, Oct. 10, from 1 to 5:30 p.m.

Sponsored by the University of New Mexico Native American Studies Department, the event "Continuing the Pueblo Journey: Past, Present and Future," is free and open to the public.

Produced by KNME-TV and the Institute of American Indian Arts, the two-hour video highlights the Pueblo people's 500-year struggle to remain sovereign and preserve their culture. The video will be shown first followed by a panel discussion.

"This event will once again gather people to discuss the issues that were brought forward in the film - cultural identity, sovereignty, the role of women in Pueblo societies, education and language preservation," said Greg Cajete, UNM associate professor and director of Native American Studies. A project researcher for the video, Cajete, of Santa Clara Pueblo, holds a joint appointment with the UNM College of Education.

Narrated by Conroy Chino, written by Larry Walsh and acclaimed native author Simon Ortiz, and directed by Diane Reyna, "Surviving Columbus" won the 1992 PBS Peabody Award for Best Documentary.

"The video is a pioneer in the sense that native people and scholars collectively recount the story of Pueblo people from their perspective," Cajete noted, adding that the project took two years to complete. "There was a lack of information about Pueblo history from the native perspective. It offers a historical, visual timeline and is meant to be an educational video."

Native leaders from throughout the state have been invited to participate in the panel presentation. Cajete hopes it will be a jumping-off point for new ventures.
