Photo and Video Opportunity: 800 New Mexico high school students will engage in a variety of activities at UNM.

UNM HOSTS HISPANO DAY OCT. 25

El Centro de la Raza and Recruitment Services at the University of New Mexico will host Hispano Student Day 2002 on Friday, Oct. 25 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Johnson Center in the main gym on the UNM campus. Approximately 800 Hispanic high school juniors and seniors from throughout New Mexico will be on campus to learn about UNM’s application process and college life.

This year’s theme for Hispano Student Day is “!UNM-Hazlo - UNM-Do it!”

The event is organized by the Hispano Student Day Committee. Juniors will participate in workshops that are both interesting and interactive. Seniors will have two options. Those seniors who bring a completed admission application and an official transcript can take advantage of onsite admissions (application fee to be waived). Another option for seniors will be to experience a mini UNM. The goal of the day is for students to leave Hispano Student Day with a plan of action.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the welcome by UNM students begins at 9 a.m. A counselor/sponsor session will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided from 11:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. Mariachi music entertainment will also be provided during lunch, with a special keynote address by Dr. F. Chris Garcia, UNM President.

“Hispano Student Day at UNM is a special day for the students who often do not have the encouragement to go to college,” said John J. Lopez, committee member and teacher at Albuquerque High School. “It is a day when our students can get on a college campus and realize that it is not an insurmountable task for them to be there in a year or two. They are nurtured by their fellow Hispanos from the campus who know the value of a college education and are truly interested in their success in life.”

This event is sponsored by El Centro de la Raza and Recruitment Services in conjunction with various campus departments.
