Oct. 7, 2002 UNMs Diplomat in Residence and UNM political
science professor to present at town hall on global response to terrorism Richele Keller, diplomat in residence for the United States Department
of State at the University of New Mexico, and Mark Peceny, UNM associate
professor of political science, will present at a town hall, A Global
Response to Terrorism, Thursday, Oct. 24. The event begins at 7
p.m. at the Catholic Center, 4000 St. Joseph Place, NW in Albuquerque.
As part of Worldwide United Nation Day, Keller will discuss the United
States position as it relates to the topic. Peceny will discuss the role
of the United Nations. A senior foreign service officer, Keller has 25 years of service with
the Department of State and has worked in about 50 countries and lived
in six. Her last overseas posting was as regional consular officer for
Southern Africa, based in Johannesburg at the time of the democratic transition
from 1993 to 1996. Keller also served as consul in Prague at the time
of the Velvet Revolution from 1989-1990. Pecenys research and teaching interests are in the areas of international
relations, American foreign policy and inter-American relations, with
specific focus on democratic peace and US military interventions.
He has published in International Studies Quarterly, the Latin American
Research Review and the Journal of Peace Research and a book titled Democracy
at the Point of Bayonets on the promotion of democracy during US
military interventions. Pennsylvania State University Press, 1999. Eric Sirotkin, lawyer for the international monitor of South Africas Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and Emad Fraitekh, executive web producer for the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, will present alternative views to the topic. ### |
