October 7, 2002 UNM HOSTS 5TH ANNUAL LINGUISTICS CONFERENCE Distinguished linguist Dr. Ronald Langacker, University of California
at San Diego, a specialist in cognitive grammar, will be a keynote speaker
at the Fifth Annual High Desert Linguistics Society Conference to be held
Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2 on the UNM campus at Dane Smith Hall and
the Anderson Schools of Management. Renowned anthropologist Dr. Barbara King, College of William and Mary,
an expert in the communication and cognition of primates, will be the
other keynote speaker. The High Desert Linguistics Society (HDLS) is the graduate student organization
of the UNM Department of Linguistics. Presenters from across the United
States as well as 12 other countries will give talks about linguistics
and related disciplines. "The HDLS conference has wide appeal because it has high caliber
presentations, a social network component, and a professional, yet enjoyable
atmosphere," says Christopher Shank, conference organizer and graduate
student in the UNM Linguistics Department. Twenty-minute presentations kick off the conference on Friday morning
at 8 a.m. followed by 10-minute Q&A sessions. Speakers are scheduled
on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Keynote addresses begin at 1:30 p.m.
