UNM HOSTS 5TH ANNUAL LINGUISTICS CONFERENCE
Draws International Attention

Distinguished linguist Dr. Ronald Langacker, University of California at San Diego, a specialist in cognitive grammar, will be a keynote speaker at the Fifth Annual High Desert Linguistics Society Conference to be held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2 on the UNM campus at Dane Smith Hall and the Anderson Schools of Management.

Renowned anthropologist Dr. Barbara King, College of William and Mary, an expert in the communication and cognition of primates, will be the other keynote speaker.

The High Desert Linguistics Society (HDLS) is the graduate student organization of the UNM Department of Linguistics. Presenters from across the United States as well as 12 other countries will give talks about linguistics and related disciplines.

"The HDLS conference has wide appeal because it has high caliber presentations, a social network component, and a professional, yet enjoyable atmosphere," says Christopher Shank, conference organizer and graduate student in the UNM Linguistics Department.

Twenty-minute presentations kick off the conference on Friday morning at 8 a.m. followed by 10-minute Q&A sessions. Speakers are scheduled on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Keynote addresses begin at 1:30 p.m. each day.
