PEÑASCO NATIVE ACCEPTED INTO UNM COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

Nieves RomeroAs the oldest of three children, Nieves Romero of Peñasco will be the first in her family to earn a college degree.

She recently completed three years of studies at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and has been accepted into the UNM College of Pharmacy.

After she graduates in 2006, Romero will seek a pharmacy position in Peñasco or nearby Taos. "I want to live and work near home," she says. "I just love it there."

A member of the Phi Eta Sigma and Golden Key honor societies, Romero not only survived complex courses she mastered them. Chemistry, calculus, anatomy, microbiology, computer science and economics are among the prerequisites she had to fulfill to be accepted into the Doctor of Pharmacy program.

A few weeks into her first semester, she says the problem-based learning is a challenge. "I'm learning a lot, it's a neat program. Becoming a pharmacist is a huge responsibility," she says.

Inducted as a freshman into community service driven Phi Eta Sigma, she volunteers regularly. Romero chaired last year's committee for the annual Hanging of the Greens holiday event at the UNM president's house, gathered canned goods for a food bank, sold valentines to raise money for UNM Children's Hospital and took part in Spring Storm, a community-wide service event.

Romero entered UNM right out of high school and has lived in the dorms. She credits Ben Vasquez, counselor at Peñasco High School, for providing her with information about college opportunities. "He helped with applying to schools and financial aid. He knew his stuff and that made it so much easier," she says.

"It's hard to leave home, but if I hadn't left right away I don't think I ever would have," Romero adds. "It has been a great experience. College isn't for everyone, but I think everybody needs to at least try it," she says.
