UNM SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH MEXICO, STATE OF NEW MEXICO

Edgardo Garcia Carillo, INAH, and Provost Brian Foster sign the addenda as LAII Deputy Director Theo Crevenna looks on.

University of New Mexico Provost Brian Foster today signed Addenda to the 1994 Agreement with the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) of Mexico, the New Mexico State Office of Cultural Affairs and the Camino Real Project, Inc.

"The signing points to the importance UNM places on its relationships and activities between Mexico and state of New Mexico agencies," said Foster.

The original four-lateral agreement, signed in 1994, resulted in joint activities related to the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the royal road from Mexico City to Santa Fe, New Mexico, as well as archeological work in New Mexico and in Chihuahua, which has been going on for more than six years.

"We were pleased to sponsor, together with INAH and the US Park Service, the US Bureau of Land Management and the Museum of New Mexico, the VIII Colloquium on the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, 'Culture, Commerce and Community,'" said Foster.

In addition to Foster, signers of the document included, from INAH Edgardo Garcia Carillo; for the New Mexico State Office of Cultural Affairs, Dr. J. Edson Way; and for the Camino Real Project, Inc., Dr. Gabrielle G. Palmer.

Two other INAH officials, Etnol. Raul Sergio Arroyo Garcia, Director General and Dr. Moises Rosas, Technical Secretary will sign the document later on in Mexico City.

Over the past year and a half, representatives from all four participating institutions have met, worked and produced 11 projects included in the signed document. Several UNM entities were involved in the projects, including the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, the Department of Anthropology, the College of Education, the Latin American and Iberian Institute through its work with the Camino Real Project, the UNM General Library and others.

"We wish to thank the representatives of our three collaborating institutions for their dedicated collaboration over the past nearly ten years. We are certain that important advances in scientific and cultural fields will be achieved. And we are equally confident that these joint efforts can only improve the relations between Mexico and the United States," said Foster.
