HENRY T. WRIGHT TO DELIVER JAR DISTINGUISHED LECTURE AT UNM

The XV Journal of Anthropological Research (JAR) Distinguished Lecture is set for Thursday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the University of New Mexico Anthropology Lecture Hall, room 163 near the corner of Redondo Drive and Roma Ave.

University of Michigan Professor Henry T. Wright will present “Experiments in State-Building: New Research in Mesopotamia and Madagascar.”

A seminar, “Regional Archeological Survey in the Heartland of Early Chinese Civilization,” will be held Friday, Nov. 15 at noon in Anthropology Room 178 (NE corner of main the main Anthropology Building).

For 35 years, Wright, who received his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago in 1967, has been one of the leading figures in the study of the rise of civilizations. His research has focused especially on the Middle East and Madagascar, but, as a consummate fieldworker, he has also done archeological survey and excavation in many other regions of the world, as well as in the U.S.—on subjects as varied as the Paleoindians, the Paleolithic, early agriculture, Roman Egypt, etc. He is a specialist in both lithic and ceramic artifacts, and a major theoretician on the question of the origins of complex societies. These eclectic interests and expertise are reflected in an extraordinary record of publication all over the globe.

Wright counts New Mexico among his homes. For many years he was a key member of the National Geographic Society’s Committee for Research & Exploration, which funds much archeological research around the world. Wright is also a member of the Santa Fe Institute’s Science Board & Steering Committee. He is a MacArthur Fellow and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Both the lecture and seminar will be illustrated, and are free and open to the public. Both venues are handicap-accessible.

The Journal of Anthropological Research is an international bulletin of general anthropology published quarterly by UNM since 1945. For information on the journal or on the lecture, call 277-4544 or see the JAR Web site: www.unm.edu/~jar.

A subscription to JAR —$30 per year for individuals— helps support the lectures, which are published in the Journal in timely fashion.
