MOVING THE MESSAGE: HOW TO TELL THE STORY OF THE WEST
The interdisciplinary lecture series, Visions for the American
West, will host its final lecture of the fall semester featuring
Richard Johnson-Sheehan on Sunday, Nov. 3. The lecture, Moving the
Message: How to Tell the Story of the West, will be held in room
163 in the Anthropology Building at the University of New Mexico beginning
at 4:30 p.m. The series is organized by the Department of Geography at
UNM. The 90-minute lecture, which is free and open to the public, will discuss
ways to deal with the importance of effectively communicating the values
of place in the West the dramatic landscapes, the natural resources,
the human communities so that people will begin to make wiser choices
about the land, both individually and collectively, in their corporations,
government bodies and institutions. A panel discussion on the need to get the word out on the problems and
prospects for the landscape of the American West will follow Johnson-Sheehans
lecture. The panel includes experts in book and magazine publishing, television
and daily newspapers. Members of the panel include David Dunaway, producer of the award-winning
National Public Radio series, Writing the Southwest; Michael
Kamins, executive producer, KNME; Charles E. Little, president of the
American Land Publishing Project; Lawrence Spohn, deputy editorial editor
and senior science writer, Albuquerque Tribune; and George F. Thompson,
president of the Center for American Places. The panel discussion will be moderated by Richard Johnson-Sheehan, director
of the Professional Writing Program at UNM. He is also the chair of the
mid-Rio Grande chapter of the Sierra Club. # # # |
