‘MOVING THE MESSAGE: HOW TO TELL THE STORY OF THE WEST’
TOPIC OF EIGHTH LECTURE IN VISIONS OF AMERICAN WEST SERIES

The interdisciplinary lecture series, “Visions for the American West,” will host its final lecture of the fall semester featuring Richard Johnson-Sheehan on Sunday, Nov. 3. The lecture, “Moving the Message: How to Tell the Story of the West,” will be held in room 163 in the Anthropology Building at the University of New Mexico beginning at 4:30 p.m. The series is organized by the Department of Geography at UNM.

The 90-minute lecture, which is free and open to the public, will discuss ways to deal with the importance of effectively communicating the values of place in the West — the dramatic landscapes, the natural resources, the human communities — so that people will begin to make wiser choices about the land, both individually and collectively, in their corporations, government bodies and institutions.

A panel discussion on the need to get the word out on the problems and prospects for the landscape of the American West will follow Johnson-Sheehan’s lecture. The panel includes experts in book and magazine publishing, television and daily newspapers.

Members of the panel include David Dunaway, producer of the award-winning National Public Radio series, “Writing the Southwest;” Michael Kamins, executive producer, KNME; Charles E. Little, president of the American Land Publishing Project; Lawrence Spohn, deputy editorial editor and senior science writer, Albuquerque Tribune; and George F. Thompson, president of the Center for American Places.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Richard Johnson-Sheehan, director of the Professional Writing Program at UNM. He is also the chair of the mid-Rio Grande chapter of the Sierra Club.
