UNM LIBRARIAN TO CHAIR NATIONAL COUNCIL

Dan BarkleyGovernment Information Director Dan Barkley at the University of New Mexico General Library has been appointed chair of the Depository Library Council (DLC). This marks the first time an individual from New Mexico has held the post in DLC's 30-year history.

The DLC consists of 15 individuals invited by the Public Printer of the United States to serve three-year rotating terms. Five members are selected annually from the library community, government and non-government communities. Members of Depository Library Council advise the Public Printer on matters relating to the Federal Depository Library Program.

Michael DiMario, Public Printer, heads up the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO). The DLC serves as his advisory board.

"As council members, we gather twice a year and develop a list of recommendations, commendations and action items to improve the dissemination, preservation and archiving of government information," said Barkley.

Barkley's class recommended him for chair and the entire council voted him in. He will fill the chair's role for one year effective following the spring 2003 meeting in Reno, said Barkley.

The depository library system includes some 1,300 sites nationally. Only 51 sites are regional, such as the depository library at Zimmerman Library. Regional libraries receive all documents and materials disseminated through or by the GPO. Other smaller libraries receive selective materials reflective of their institution's instruction, mission or purpose.

"The Public Printer tries to get the widest spectrum in making appointments so that all segments of the various communities are represented," said Barkley.

"It is an honor to be selected by my peers. It demonstrates strong recognition of a lot of hard work in the profession. It is not only an honor for me, but also for UNM and the library," said Barkley.
