November 6, 2002 OPEN DOORS SERIES TO FEATURE UNM, NMSU SPANISH PROFESSORS The Open Doors: Regional Scholars and Writers Series continues on Tuesday,
Nov. 12, at 2 p.m. at the University of New Mexico's Zimmerman Library
with Spanish language and literature professors from UNM and New Mexico
State University. The presentation places an emphasis on the collaboration between Tey
Diana Rebolledo, Ph.D., Regents' Professor and chair of the Spanish department
at UNM, and Ricardo Aguilar Melantzón, Ph.D., Regents' Professor,
professor of Spanish and director of the Instituto de Estudios Chicanos
at NMSU. Rebolledo, who teaches Latin American and Chicano/a Literature, is the
author of "Women Singing in the Snow: A Cultural Analysis of Chicana
Literature" (1995) and other works on Chicana and Latin American
women writers. Her talk, "Questioning Nepantla: the land in between.
Border Literature, Border Theories" is an exploration of the complex
issues of how the border is seen as a place of boundaries or inclusion.
She will address major border perspectives and the authors and literary
pieces that address them. Aguilar is the author of "Madreselvas en flor," which earned
him the José Fuentes Mares Mexican National Prize for Literature.
He is the author of numerous other essays and short stories, as well as
the translator of "Por el amor de Pedro Infante" by Denise Chávez. He will read from Beth Pollack's translation of his work "A Barlovento/Windward"
and make additional observations about the nature of the border and its
role in his writing. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Ten percent of the
proceeds will go to the library. This series is coordinated by the General Library's Center for Southwest
Research and DILARES, the Division of Iberian and Latin American Resources
