November 6, 2002 UNM CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK The Office of International Programs and Studies at the University of
New Mexico celebrates International Education Week, Nov. 18-22, with a
symposium and international festival. The symposium focuses on United States foreign policy since Sept. 11,
2001. On Monday, Nov. 18, 4-6 p.m., Dane Smith Hall, room 120, Stephen
Zunes, political science professor at the University of San Francisco,
will present the keynote address, "The U.S. in the Middle East: Iraq,
Terrorism and the Quest for Security." Media and U.S. foreign policy is the focus of a session on Tuesday, Nov.
19, from noon-2 p.m. The location is to be announced. On the same day,
the session, "Trade and Aid, One Year After 9-11," is scheduled
in Dane Smith Hall, room 120, from 4-6 p.m. The International Festival is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 20, in Johnson
Center's auxiliary gym and features food, music and entertainment from
around the world. Also on Wednesday, UNM will present the International
Excellence Awards recognizing one faculty, staff and student for outstanding
efforts in international education, 2:15 p.m., also in the gym. On Thursday, Nov. 21 from noon-2 p.m., the session, "U.S. Policy
Toward Latin America" will be presented at a location to be announced.
On the same day, "The U.S. in the Middle East" is scheduled
from 4-6 p.m. in Dane Smith Hall, room 120. The session features a special
presentation on a historical approach to the situation in Iraq. The symposium is sponsored by the Office of International Programs and Studies, the Student Fee Review Board, Vice President for Student Affairs, School of Law, College of Arts and Sciences and the departments of Communication and Journalism, History and Political Science. # # # |
