November 5, 2002 UNM faculty can now submit grades via Internet The UNM Office of the Registrar is implementing Web Grades for the Fall
2002 semester. The new web-based system allows faculty to post grades
via the Internet instead of submitting grades on paper. We have been looking into Web Grades for awhile, said Kaye
Reeves, supervisor of student records at the Office of the Registrar.
We started researching and investigating the project last spring. She said the biggest rewards of this new method are that grades will
be posted faster and paper will be eliminated. Reeves said CIRT has been instrumental in implementing the project and
is grateful for the work done by CIRT employees Liz Gresham, Jean Russell
and Andy Gutierrez. She also acknowledged Peter White, dean of University
College, Kathleen Sena, University registrar, and Rose Bennett, associate
registrar, for their support for the project. A pilot program was conducted with classes ending on or before Oct. 12.
Reeves said grades from 163 classes were entered via Web Grades. After the success of the pilot project, we were given the go-ahead
for this semester by the registrar, Reeves said. Reeves said the biggest challenge is making sure all instructors have
a UNM NetID. Surprisingly, a lot of faculty did not have a UNM NetID,
she said, adding that many faculty use other e-mail accounts such as Yahoo
or Hotmail. The Office of the Registrar will work with faculty to ensure they get
a UNM NetID and will assist those having difficulty with inputting their
grades via the Internet, she said. All faculty listed as instructor of record need to have a UNM NetID to
access and submit grades online. Web Grades will be open on the last scheduled
day of the course for short courses and beginning Dec. 7 for 16 week courses.
Web Grades will be available from Dec. 7 (including winter break) through
Jan. 2, 2003 at 7 p.m. for submitting grades. The URL for Web Grades and class lists and a demo for each function is
www3.unm.edu/sis/ClassList. Reeves said that training sessions for faculty have been scheduled. Contact Reeves at 277-6820 or dkayer@unm.edu for additional information regarding these sessions. ### |
