UNM INTERNATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARD RECIPIENTS TO BE RECOGNIZED

The University of New Mexico will recognize five individuals for outstanding contributions to its international programs at the UNM International Festival Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. at Johnson Gym on the UNM campus.

The recipients of the 2002 International Excellence Awards include: Deborah Boehm, graduate student in the Department of Anthropology; Guillermina Engelbrecht, director of UNM’s Latin American Programs in Education and regents’ professor; Carolyn Gonzales, senior public affairs representative; Ruth Hashimoto, volunteer for the Alliance for Transportation Research Institute at UNM; and Arthur Kaufman, M.D., chair of Family and Community Medicine.

The awards are given annually to UNM faculty, staff and students who have made exceptional contributions in international scholarship, research and education in support of international students and study abroad programs, or in promoting international goodwill. The UNM Office of International Programs and Studies and the International Excellence Award Committee sponsor the awards.

Boehm will receive the student International Excellence Award. Prior to coming to UNM, Boehm was a volunteer in Ecuador with the Harvard Institute for International Development’s WorldTech program. She received her master’s degree in Latin American Studies at UNM and in 1997 began her doctoral studies in ethnology at UNM. Throughout her graduate coursework, she has participated in numerous study abroad programs and conducted various research projects with an international emphasis. She has studied in Mexico and Venezuela. Boehm is also an instructor in the Women Studies Program and Anthropology Department.

Engelbrecht will receive the faculty International Excellence Award from main campus. As director of the College of Education’s Latin American Programs in Education, she arranges symposia and international professional development programs that bring participants from around the world to UNM. She consults with foreign governments on educational issues. As a professor, she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in early childhood education. She serves as graduate advisor for Early Childhood Education with an emphasis on the master’s in elementary education program. Engelbrecht received her Ph.D. and master’s degree from Arizona State University.

Kaufman will receive the faculty International Excellence Award from north campus. For more than 20 years, he has worked to implement his vision of improving the health of underserved populations. As one of the founding leaders of the primary care curriculum for the UNM School of Medicine, he has worked to train future doctors and health care workers in rural and community settings. He was instrumental in disseminating curriculum worldwide from Argentina to Zimbabwe. He is the director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center at UNM and is an active member of numerous organizations. He received his bachelor’s degree at the University of Chicago and his M.D. at State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center.

Gonzales will receive the staff International Excellence Award. For the past two years she has traveled to Berlin to help direct Germany Today for Young Journalists from the USA. The two-week program introduces participants to German media, government, and political and cultural leaders. Gonzales was active in planning and promoting the recent VIII Coloquio Internacional de El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, which attracted more than 170 participants to UNM. As envisioned in the UNM Strategic Plan, she increases UNM’s international presence by writing for publications in the U.S. and abroad. She received her bachelor’s degree in English at UNM. She is working on a master’s degree in Comparative Literature/Cultural Studies.

Hashimoto will receive the volunteer International Excellence Award. She was nominated for her lifetime contributions as an international humanitarian, peace activist and volunteer. She has devoted her life to being a conduit and mediating influence that increases understanding and bring peace between peoples of different cultures. She has lived in Albuquerque for the last 50 years and started the New Mexico Chapter of the United Nations Association as well as initiating the City of Albuquerque’s involvement in the Sister Cities International Program.

UNM celebrates International Education Week, Nov. 18-22, with a symposium and international festival. The International Festival is set for Wednesday, Nov. 20, in Johnson Center's auxiliary gym and features food and entertainment. The symposium focuses on United States foreign policy since
Sept. 11, 2001, with events taking place on Nov. 18, 19 and 21.
