Army Sergeant Pursues Law Degree at UNM

Robert A. Guillen, Jr.Robert A. Guillen, Jr., of Santa Fe, NM, a member of the University of New Mexico School of Law class of 2003, is on the dean's list for spring semester.

The 1990 graduate of Santa Fe High school is the son of Fabiola (C de Baca) Guillen and Robert A. Guillen Sr.

He graduated from UNM with a bachelor's in political science in May 1999. Guillen will graduate one semester early in December with a law degree focused on constitutional and criminal law.

Guillen is a retired United States army sergeant. He served in the arm services from 1990-95. He now serves in the National Guard as a Sergeant First Class (E-7) instructor.

He entered law school to focus on a career that helps crime victims.

"I have always thought that one aspect the law ignored was the victim. The victim of a crime has little voice," he said.

Guillen participates in a variety of student organizations. He participates in the Federalist society and served as president his second year of law school. The group advocates for a re-emphasis on constitutional principles in the study and application of law. He is currently president of the UNM School of Law Veterans' Association.

Guillen also participates in the Mexican American Law Students Association, Business Law Society, and the Women's Law Caucus.

Guillen has been involved with law outside of the classroom. He has served as an extern for Chief Justice Serna at the New Mexico Supreme Court and extern for the Air Force Judge Advocate Generals', at Kirtland Air Force Base. Along with his externships, Guillen has been a tutor for first year law students.

He credits some of his success in part to real world legal experiences.

"Chief Justice Serna, Colonel Stringfield, and US Attorney David Iglesisas have given me insight that has proved invaluable for both personal and professional growth."

Students who attain the dean's list at the UNM School of Law have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher during a semester which 12 or more credit hours are earned, of which nine are graded.
