UNM NATIVE AMERICAN STUDIES HOSTS TALK BY ECOLOGIST
IN CELEBRATION OF NATIONAL AMERICAN INDIAN HERITAGE MONTH

The University of New Mexico's Native American Studies (NAS) will host a visit from Raymond Pierotti, Ph.D., professor in the University of Kansas Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, on Monday, Nov. 25.

Pierotti will present "Communities as both Ecological and Social Entities in Modern Native America: thoughts from the past and paths towards the future" from 10 a.m. to noon at NAS, Mesa Vista Hall, rm. 3080, and from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Biology Department, rm.100.

An open discussion will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. in Biology, rm. 139.

Pierotti, of Comanche descent, is an expert in the field of evolutionary and field ecology, marine mammals and Native American and western views of nature.

He has authored numerous articles and received several teaching awards, including "favorite professor of biology" in 1996, 1999 and 2000. Pierotti earned a Ph.D. in biology from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Novia Scotia, Canada, in 1980.

The visit in is conjunction with the NAS Fall 2002 Lecture Series and in honor of National American Indian Heritage Month.
