ROSWELL NATIVE RECEIVES ARCHITECTURE AWARD AT UNM

DeAngela Velasquez, a 2000 graduate of Roswell High School, recently received an award for excellence in studio work from the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning.

Velasquez said, "This award means so much to me because it allowed me to take a step back and realize all the hard work and time I put in was appreciated. This wouldn't have been possible, however, without the support of my family and friends who set the foundation of my character."

Andy Pressman, director of the architecture program, presented her with the award, a certificate and a book. He said the award honors students for outstanding design ability. "Studio work is the core of the curriculum. It is particularly significant to receive such an award because it implies great potential as a future architect," he said.

Velasquez is the daughter of Ryc and Diana Velasquez. She plans to graduate from UNM in 2004 and then leave New Mexico to pursue a master's degree. "Then I will start my career creating beautiful spaces for people to interact!" she said.

Velasquez received the award at the 2002 honors convocation, the first time such an event has been held for the School of Architecture and Planning.
