December 18, 2002 GILFEATHER NAMED INTERIM ASSOCIATE VICE PROVOST FOR RESEARCH, INGBER
AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING CENTER Frank L. Gilfeather has been named interim associate vice provost for
Research at the University of New Mexico, said Terry Yates, vice provost
for Research. Gilfeather served as executive director of the High Performance
Computing Education and Research Center (HPCERC) at UNM for the past 10
years. Yates also announced that Marc Ingber, professor and chair of the Mechanical
Engineering Department at UNM, has been named executive director of the
HPCERC effective Jan.1, 2003. Frank founded HPCERC and the Maui High Performance Center and in
doing so made UNM a national player in high performance computing,
said Yates, vice provost for Research. We look forward to his help
and vision in the office of Vice Provost for Research. Gilfeather serves as professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics
at UNM. He has served as special assistant to the dean of Arts and Sciences
and as department chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
He was the first staff director for the Board on Mathematical Sciences
at the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences during
the period from 1985-87. From 1983-85 he served as program director for
the Division of Mathematical Sciences, National Science Foundation (NSF).
At NSF he directed the Modern Analysis Program. In these capacities he
interacted with and initiated programs with most federal research funding
agencies. His positions, in addition to the HPCERC, NSF, and NRC, include Indiana
University, University of Hawaii, University of Nebraska - Lincoln, and
UNM. Gilfeather has been a visiting senior scholar at Leeds University
in the United Kingdom, a member of numerous professional societies and
organizations, and has served on numerous national and international program
and professional committees. HPCERC has established a strong foundation at UNM in computational
science and engineering, Ingber said. I look forward to working
with faculty from across campus to build on this foundation to develop
national recognized academic programs. Ingber was recently elected as a Fellow in the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers (ASME). This is the highest honor given by the governing body
of ASME, which consists of more than 130,000 members. Only two percent
of its members are elected as fellows. Ingber received his Ph.D. in applied mechanics from the University of
Michigan. He was the director of the Albuquerque High Performance Computing
Center from 1997 to 1999 and has an international reputation in high-end
computing. He earned the 1994 Gordon Bell Prize for high performance computing.
His research interests are concentrated in computational fluid mechanics
where he has performed studies on multiphase flows, flow fields about
three-dimensional cavitating bodies, selective withdrawal from stratified
reservoirs, acoustic shape optimization and vorticity methods for the
solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. He is the author of more than
90 technical publications, sits on the editorial board of two international
journals in numerical methods and has been a member of more than 15 scientific
advisory boards for international conferences. Dr. Ingber has an extensive record in the areas of educational
leadership, research and development, technical publications and providing
services to various firms and governmental agencies, said School
of Engineering Dean Joe Cecchi. I am confident that Marc will excel
in his new position. HPCERC is a strategic University Center whose role is to focus and undertake High Performance Computing (HPC) initiatives for UNM. The Center has so far played a significant role in the University and community by introducing the high-end and collaborative computing that is reshaping many aspects of University activities. The Center engages in research and development, service, and educational collaborations and activities with departments in virtually every UNM school and college, as well as with community and external organizations. HPCERC receives funding from the National Computational Science Alliance, a National Science Foundation advanced computing consortium. ###
