January 9, 2003 SANTA FE NATIVE PURSUES PASSION, GOALS AT UNM
Now a fourth-year student at age 21, Chaya says Phi Eta Sigma helped
her to embrace her goals through leadership, social awareness and self-motivation. "I am not in Phi Eta Sigma for what they can do for me, but for
what I can do for myself," she says. "There are great gifts
in giving service to others. People often get so caught up in their own
lives and their own problems that they never look outside to see the struggles
of the many people who have it harder than we do." Rose was voted Chapter Relations chair and acts as the society's historian,
photographing meetings and activities. Along with the personal satisfaction she gained, Rose says Phi Eta Sigma
gave her a social life. "I really enjoy working with other people who are motivated and
interested in helping the community," she says. "It's important
to work together and I think participating in community service allows
people to be compassionate and teaches them to be grateful for their own
lives." Rose, a dedicated Art Studio major in the college of Fine Arts, wants
to make a career of her devotion. Rose most enjoys working with mixed media, combining unlikely elements
such as paper, oils, acrylics and pastels. "I like to work abstractly," she says. "I can work off
of any medium." For Chaya, art is matter of personal gain. "Art is my release," she says. "It allows me to be free." With a strong sense of self-motivation, it is not surprising that Rose
confesses to a passion for learning. "It is a part of who I have always been and who I will continue
to be. I am here because I love to learn and because I love art,"
she says. Another passion Rose has is for helping and teaching others. "I have always loved working with children," she says. "I
think teaching could someday allow me to share my knowledge and inspire
others. Something very special to students is to have a teacher that they
believe they will remember forever - a teacher who will make a difference." As more and more schools across the country are cutting art and other
creative programs to make time for national testing preparations, Rose
hopes to be an inspiration and encourage children striving to reveal themselves
through art. "Children are no longer encouraged to express themselves through
the arts as they may have once been," she says. "I would like
to bring the arts to a higher level of respect." Rose tries to live expressively as a lover of dance, writing and music. - # # # - |
