UNM BIOLOGY PROFESSOR TO SPEAK AT THE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE RIO GRANDE BRANCH OF AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MICROBIOLOGY

University of New Mexico Biology Department Associate Professor Diana Northrup will be one of several speakers to address the Rio Grande Branch of the American Society for Microbiology (RGASM) at its annual meeting Feb. 7-8, in room 135 of the Nursing/Pharmacy Building located on UNM’s North Campus. The meeting, which begins at 2 p.m. on Friday, will emphasize environmental microbiology and clinical microbiology.

Northrup was featured last October in a segment on the science program NOVA on KNME-TV. Her segment, “The Lives of Extremophiles,” was part of the program, “The Mysterious Life of Caves.”

Other speakers include Todd Primm, Department of Biology, UTEP, and Eric Johnson, a Waksman Foundation speaker and professor of Food Microbiology and Toxicology at the University of Wisconsin. Additional short talks will also be presented by UNM faculty and staff.

A student abstract competition, featuring the work of undergraduate and graduate students, will also be part of the two-day meeting. Six awards, three in each level, will be awarded to the winners. For more information on the abstract competition contact Stephen Young, Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, UNM Health Sciences Center, at 272-8888, or via e-mail at sayoung@salud.unm.edu.
