AUTHOR AND POET SIMON ORTIZ TO SPEAK AT UNM

Simon J. OrtizWidely regarded as one of today's most important Native American poets, Simon J. Ortiz will deliver a talk and poetry reading in conjunction with the University of New Mexico Native American Studies Spring 2003 Lecture Series set for Thursday, Feb. 6, and Friday, Feb. 7.

On Feb. 6 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Ortiz will present "Continuance in the 21st Century" centered on the survival and continuance of Native American culture against the many threats to its existence, past and present. The talk is preceded by a reception from 6 to 6:30 p.m. in Mitchell Hall, rm. 122, and followed by discussion until 8 p.m.

On Feb. 7, Ortiz will give a poetry reading from 6 to 8 p.m. in Dane Smith Hall, rm. 120, preceded by a reception from 5 to 6 p.m. in the same location.

Ortiz, of Acoma Pueblo, received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from UNM this past spring. He is teaching at the University of Toronto Department of English.

The author of 15 books and editor or co-editor of five others, he pens poems, short stories, essays and children's books.

Ortiz will also meet with students and faculty while at UNM.

The events are free and open to the public.
