Jan. 31, 2003 ARCHULETA RESIGNS FROM UNM PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH COMMITTEE Outgoing University of New Mexico Regent David Archuleta today announced
he is resigning from the UNM Presidential Search Committee, which he chairs. "I have served as one of the Regent members on the Presidential
Search Committee. However, my term on the Board of Regents has recently
expired and I've come to the conclusion that committee should have Regents
who are members of the board that will hire the new president," said
Archuleta. Gov. Bill Richardson recently nominated four new members to the UNM Board of Regents. "My resignation will make it possible for one of the members of the current board to serve on the search committee," he said. "They're the ones who will have to meet and evaluate the Presidential
candidates and it's important that they're comfortable with them. I'm
leaving the position knowing full well that we have a terrific administration
and faculty and staff and I think it's also in their best interests that
I resign," he said. He said he has notified UNM Board of Regents President Larry Willard
of his decision. Archuleta said he believes his decision will not affect
the search process or its timetable. "I plan to name a new chair in the near future subject to Board
of Regents' approval," said Willard, adding that he agrees that the
search process and timetable will not be set back following Archuleta's
resignation. "I certainly thank Regent Archuleta for his leadership
and service on the board as well as serving on the search committee. He
has been a big asset during his tenure at the University and he will be
missed," Willard said. ### |
