UNM showcases programs at State Capitol Feb. 10

UNM’s people and programs will be celebrated at the New Mexico State Capitol on Monday, Feb. 10 from 9 a.m to 5 p.m.

Nearly 20 departments will represent “UNM Day at the State Capitol” including the Manufacturing, Training and Technology Center (MTTC), KNME TV, Continuing Education/Extended University and various departments from UNM’s Health Sciences. Highlights of the day include interactive robotics, HSC’s “Chip” Mobil Simulator, Chemistry Department’s distance learning experiment and hands-on activities from UNM’s Recreational Services.

“This is an excellent opportunity to showcase just some of what is so great about our University — the exciting, the remarkable, even the inspiring,” said Susan Moczygemba-McKinsey, director of University Communications/Marketing. “We want people to realize that what UNM does touches every part of New Mexico. So we’ll take our showcase right into the State Capitol when it is at its busiest, and we’ll reach not only the Executive and the Legislature, but a lively gathering of New Mexicans from all over the state as well.

Space limits the number of exhibits, but they are just one element of the event. “A major contribution will come courtesy of the students, faculty, staff and alumni who will be visiting each of the legislative offices and talking to their hometown elected officials about UNM,” she said.

One of the most anticipated events during every legislative session is the UNM Alumni Reception that honors the Legislature, she said. “We are fortunate that our UNM Day on February 10 will coincide with and benefit from this long-standing tradition,” she said.

The Associated Students of UNM and the Graduate Professional Student Association will represent the UNM students.

Other departments featured that day include Athletics, the Family Development Program, College of Fine Arts, New Mexico Poison Center, Public Affairs, Communications and Marketing, Science and Technology Corporation @UNM in conjunction with Zia Laser Technologies, Long Term Ecological Research (LTER), College of Nursing, Cancer Research and Treatment Center, College of Pharmacy, Consumer Health Information for the Public and School of Medicine.
