VISITING SCHOLAR PROGRAM TO FEATURE CLAREMONT GRADUATE UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, an authority on the psychology of creativity, will present a free public lecture titled, “The Creative Person and the Creative Context,” on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003 at 4:30 p.m. in The Hibben Center, room 105. The lecture is part of the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program. It is sponsored by The University Honors Program and Phi Beta Kappa.

Csikszentmihalyi, a C.S. and D.J. Davidson Professor of Psychology and the director of Quality of Life Research Center at Claremont Graduate University (CGU) in Claremont, Calif., will present the lecture on how creativity occurs at the intersection of a cultural domain, a social field and an original individual.

Csikszentmihalyi, who is also a professor at the Drucker Graduate School of Management at CGU, specializes in creativity and innovation, ethics in business and professions, flow and motivation, leadership, schools-to-work transition and worker satisfaction. He invented the concept of “flow” as a metaphorical description of the rare mental state associated with feelings of optimal satisfaction and fulfillment.

Csikszentmihalyi came to the Drucker Graduate School of Management after spending more than 20 years at the University of Chicago where he was a professor of human development, and chair of the Department of Psychology from 1985-1988. A co-founder of the “Positive Psychology” movement in the American Psychological Association, Csikszentmihalyi earned his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago and is a professor emeritus of human development at the school.

He is the author of several books including: “Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience,” “Creativity,” and his most recent work, “Good Business: Leadership, Flow, and the Making of Meaning.” Csikszentmihalyi has written 185 journal articles and 14 books.
