Feb. 17, 2003 'INTERNET2 DAY' EXPLORES HIGH PERFORMANCE NETWORKS, APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE
TO HIGHER EDUCATION
Sponsored by UNM's Computer and Information Resources and Technology
(CIRT), the event is free, but registration is required by March 7. Lunch
will be served. Internet2 is a project operated by UCAID, the University Corporation
for Advanced Internet Development. It is a collaborative effort by more
than 200 universities to develop advanced, high performance Internet technology
and applications vital to higher education missions. Internet2 has the capability to send information much faster than the
current Internet, once available only to researchers, but now in the public
domain. Only universities and colleges can become members of the consortium.
The high bandwidth available through the consortium speeds up transmission
of large files and enables collaboration among people as well as interactive
access to information and resources not possible on today's Internet.
Used widely in the arts, physical sciences, engineering, health sciences
and telemedicine, Internet2 digital video applications offer broadcast
quality videoconferencing, live distribution and on-demand access to a
variety of content as well as digital cinema and network-based studio
production. Internet2 can facilitate a global conference system with real-time interactions
connecting faculty and staff across the world. "The continuance of Internet2 at the University of New Mexico is
imperative in support of the current and emerging research and related
high-bandwidth applications. Internet2 provides a unique and invaluable
resource to the CHECS (Council for Higher Education Computing/Communications
Services) institutions which would be impossible to replace," said
Art St. George, manager of advanced communications technologies for CIRT
and event organizer. Three program managers from Internet2 will present at the event. Mary
Kratz will give a talk about "Internet2 and the Health Sciences"
and Ana Preston will present "Internet2: International Partnerships."
Program Manager Ann Doyle will link remotely from Florida where she will
be attending the "National Schools of Music Internet2 Day."
A live master class between the New World Symphony in Florida and Cleveland
Institute of Music will be transmitted as part of Doyle's presentation. UNM faculty will demonstrate expanded and improved research projects
developed with Internet2. Dr. Dale Alverson, professor at the UNM Health
Sciences Center and health reporter for KOB TV, will talk about his use
of Internet2 in telemedicine. Research scientist Tim Thomas of the UNM
Physics and Astronomy Department will give a talk on grid computing. Also discussed will be how Internet2 offers new opportunities for collaboration
between local researchers and their colleagues at other institutions.
Internet2 Days have been held at more than 50 higher education institutions
including Tufts University, Texas A & M, Michigan Tech, and Columbia
University. For more information, contact Art St. George, 277-8106, and/or visit
