UNM School of Engineering to Honor four Alumni
The University of New Mexico School of Engineering, along with the Engineering
Chapter of the UNM Alumni Association, has selected four engineers to
honor at the 5th Annual Distinguished Alumni Awards banquet on Friday,
March 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the Albuquerque Petroleum Club.
Alumni to be honored are Jack E. Bresenham (BS-EE, 1959), Victor J. Chavez
(BS-CE, 1967 & MS-CE, 1968), Lorenzo A. (Larry) Larranaga (BS-CE,
1971 & MS-CE, 1980), and Raymond J. Leopold (PhD, 1973).
Bresenham,
professor of computer science at Winthrop University, Rock Hill, S.C.,
is a native born New Mexican from Clovis. Bresenham worked 27 years for
IBM at laboratory and headquarter locations in California, New York, North
Carolina, Italy and England before retiring in 1987 to teach computer
science at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. Computer graphics is
the work for which Bresenham is known. He holds eight patents and was
twice awarded corporate Outstanding Contribution awards at IBM. His contributions
to line and circle drawing on raster displays have been in constant use
for forty years. His algorithms continue to be incorporated into both
hardware and software. His biographical sketch is in Marquis Whos

Biographical Centres Men of Achievement (16th edition).
Leopold,
vice president and director of Technical Ventures Motorola Labs, Chandler,
Ariz., is an Aviation Week and Space Technology Laureate and
an inductee in their Hall of Fame at the National Air and Space Museum.
He is a 2000 recipient of the IEEE Third Millennium Medal, and a recipient
of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Biennial
Communications Award for 1998. He was named a Motorola Distinguished Innovator
in 1993. Motorola also conferred their highest technical honor, the title
of Dan Noble Fellow, upon him in 1995. He was named a Master Innovator
by Motorola in 2001. He has been named a fellow of the Institute of Electrical
and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and has served on their Committee on
Engineering Accreditation Activities. He also served as a member of the
Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering
and Technology (ABET). He is currently on industry advisory noards at
MIT, the University of Southern California and at Arizona State University.
Leopold holds 27 U.S. patents and more than 75 patents in other countries.
Chavez,
registered professional engineer/director of planning for the City of
Albuquerque, is a founding partner in the Albuquerque Structural Engineering
firm of Chavez-Grieves Consulting Engineers, Inc. In 1997, Chavez received
the Engineer of the Year award from the New Mexico Society of Professional
Engineers. In that same year, Chavez received one of five ACEC/National
Public Service Awards. Chavez served as the chair of the Greater Albuquerque
Chamber of Commerce from 1998-99, and has been a member of the board of
directors and executive committee since 1995, as well as serving as the
chair of the Westside Planning Council. He is a past member of the board
of directors for Albuquerque Economic Development and on the board of
directors for Shared Vision.
Larranaga
is the former vice president and managing partner of Bohannan-Huston,
Inc. in Albuquerque. He has served in the New Mexico House of Representatives
since 1995, representing Albuquerques District 27. A native New
Mexican, Larranaga received the 1995 Engineer of the Year award from the
New Mexico Society of Professional Engineers. Larranaga is also active
in the Association of Commerce and Industry (ACI), the Albuquerque Hispano
Chamber of Commerce, the UNM Civil Engineering Advisory Board, the Albuquerque
Economic Forum, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He has also
served as the past vice president and past executive member of Western
Association of Highway and Transportation (WASHTO).
