March 10, 2003 UNM CONTINUING EDUCATION STAFF HONORED FOR DESIGN WORK Deborah Kastman and Sharon Steely, graphic designers with the University
of New Mexico Division of Continuing Education marketing department, have
earned national recognition from the University Continuing Education Association
(UCEA). The UCEA, located in Washington, D.C., in the National Center for Higher
Education, is the principal U.S. organization for promoting standards
of good practice and high quality in continuing education programs. The two will receive an honorable mention for design of the Spring 2003
Continuing Education catalog at the UCEA annual Awards for Excellence
for Marketing and Publications held in late March in Chicago, Ill. Steely and Kastman wrote promotional copy, designed supporting graphics
and completed the layout and prepress production for the publication.
Many other entrants drew on additional resources such as outside ad agencies,
copywriters and production coordinators for their publications. The UNM Continuing Education catalog, published three times per year,
is a 148 to 172 page, two-color publication printed on a web fed press
with a full-color cover. Between 55,000 to 65,000 catalogs are published
each semester and distributed throughout New Mexico concentrated in the
Albuquerque area. Steely said they designed the catalog to be accessible. "We want the catalog to have a user-friendly feel to it so that
someone new to UNM Continuing Education is not overwhelmed by everything
we have to offer and at the same time they can find the resource they
need," Kastman added. "It's important that it be fun to browse, too. The catalog should unfold to the viewer like an interesting story that you want to read," Steely said. ### |
