LAW STUDENTS HOST PANEL, TEACH-IN ON MIDDLE EAST CONFLICTS

Students at the University of New Mexico School of Law will host events today and tomorrow focused on current conflicts in the Middle East.

Today at 6 p.m., the National Lawyers Guild student chapter will host a panel discussion concerning the current conflict between Israel and Palestine.

On Wednesday, March 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. community members can exchange opinions and learn more about a U.S. decision to invade Iraq and the impact of war during a teach-in hosted by the National Lawyers Guild and the American Civil Liberties Union student chapters.

Featured UNM panelists include Ken Roberts, associate professor of political science; Jennifer Moore, professor of law; Mark Peceny, associate professor of political science; and Tim Canova, associate professor of law. More panelists may be announced the day of the event.

Participants will offer their viewpoints on topics such as changes in U.S. foreign policy since 9/11 and primary threats to U.S. security. Speakers will also address the humanitarian dimensions of war against Iraq, both its likely impact on the Iraqi people and the diversion of resources from emergency assistance efforts throughout the world, and the dynamics of a post-war occupation of Iraq.

Both events are free and open to the public and will be held in the Bratton Hall forum, located at the UNM School of Law, 1117 Stanford NE.
