Rehoboth Christian High School wins first place in JETS TEAMS competition

More than 75 high school students participated in the 2003 JETS TEAMS Competition sponsored by the Engineering Student Programs Office of the University of New Mexico on Tuesday, March 18. The Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science (TEAMS) competition is an academic program and competition for high school students across the country, sponsored by the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS).

Teams representing Hot Springs High School in Truth or Consequences, Rehoboth Christian High School (near Gallup) and La Cueva High School from Albuquerque participated.

The TEAMS test enables teams of high school students to develop team-building and problem-solving skills, and participate in an open-book, open-discussion, engineering problem competition. Teams learn how the math and science concepts they are learning in high school are applied to real-world problems.

The local winners include:

First place senior varsity: Rehoboth Christian High School. The team members are Gayle Doornbos, Jamie Holwerda, Neal Kruis, Sandi Morrison, Steve Robertson, Tim Tamminza, Noel Voltz and Daniel Zollinger. Jennifer Gosden is their coach.

First place junior varsity: La Cueva High School. The team members are Tom Ames, Mark Anderson, Jacob Hobbs, Kevin Meeks and Lee Walsh. Tom Morris is their coach.

The JETS national headquarters announces national and state results after Tuesday, April 1. Based on state rankings and the number of schools competing in each division, eligible teams will advance for national ranking and recognition. Teams that are advanced to national ranking will have their tests scored by a panel of engineers selected by JETS national headquarters.
