UNM 'SPRING STORM' COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT IS APRIL 12

Albuquerque organizations and residents will benefit from the University of New Mexico's 2nd annual community service project "Spring Storm" on Saturday, April 12.

Hundreds of UNM students, alumni, staff and faculty volunteers will complete projects ranging from painting and landscaping to elderly visitation and youth education.

Sponsored by "The Community Experience," an Associated Students of the University of New Mexico (ASUNM) executive agency, the daylong event includes a kick-off breakfast, sack lunches and evening barbeque.

UNM law student Dathan Weems created "Spring Storm" in fall 2001 to help students at UNM organize for community good. ASUNM President Jennifer Onuska transitioned the student organization to an executive agency this year.

Members of the Community Experience have signed up volunteers, collected donations of cash and supplies and worked with local leaders to identify those in need. Additional volunteers and supplies are needed to achieve the group's goal of "largest service project in the country."

"The Spring Storm is to provide a way for students to feel better about themselves and to appreciate what they have by helping those who are in need of assistance," said Abby E. Hanson, executive director, ASUNM Community Experience and Spring Storm.
