ARCHITECTURE PROFESSOR RECEIVES REGENTS' LECTURESHIP

Stephen Dent, AIA, associate professor and former associate dean in the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning is the recipient of a UNM Regents' Lectureship for the academic years 2002-2005.

Dent plans to use the funding to support his continuing research on sustainable design, including optimizing lighting and energy efficiency in residential applications. His work will also focus on the design and installation of a rainwater collection and photovoltaic power system.

Dent will study museums to examine the relationship between building form and day lighting strategies - a major component of sustainable design in institutional settings.

"This prestigious appointment couldn't be more timely," says Architecture Program Director Andy Pressman, FAIA, "Because we are committed to infusing sustainable design principles across the curriculum, Professor Dent is now well positioned to assume a leadership role in this critical initiative."

Dent first joined the faculty at UNM in 1980. A registered architect, Dent received his bachelor's in architecture degree from the University of Southern California and his post-professional master's of architecture from Arizona State University. He was employed by the internationally acclaimed firm Moshe Safdie Architects in Boston before accepting his first faculty appointment at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

He is a partner in Dent & Nordhaus Architects, recent winner of an International Illumination Design Award for the remodeling of B'nai Israel in Albuquerque.

Gov. Bill Richardson recently appointed Dent to serve a second term on the New Mexico Board of Examiners for Architects.
