UNM BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT SPONSORS 12TH ANNUAL RESEARCH DAY

The University of New Mexico Department of Biology is sponsoring its 12th annual research day Friday, April 4, featuring a variety of original research from undergraduates and graduates. Activities include oral and poster presentations and a keynote lecture by Dr. Edward Delong, titled “Exploring the Natural Microbial World: From Gnomes to Biomes.”

“Research day is the biggest day of the year for the department,” said Kathryn Vogel, chair of the Biology department. “It’s the 12th anniversary of the event and this year we have a record number of students presenting their own research. The students have all been working for a year or more on their own projects. It’s a superb learning experience and they have really done some incredible work. We’re very proud of them. It’s an important day to honor all of our students.”

Student posters will be displayed in Castetter Hall on the first and second floor hallways from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will be judged in two sessions. Session 1 judging, student oral presentations, will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and Session 2 will be judged from 2 - 3 p.m.

Judging of student poster presentations will also be held in two sessions. Session 1 will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and Session 2 will be held from 12 to 2 p.m. The oral presentations will be held in Castetter Hall, room 100.

Delong is a senior scientist and chair of the Science Department, research and development, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in Moss Landing, Calif. His lecture will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Northrup Hall, room 122, and will be followed by a brief awards ceremony and a reception from 4:30 to 5 p.m.
