REGISTER NOW FOR TAOS SUMMER WRITERS' CONFERENCE

Registration for the University of New Mexico Taos Summer Writers' Conference is now being accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. The conference, scheduled for Saturday, July 12 through Saturday, July 19, has been held annually at the Sagebrush Inn since 1999.

Interested individuals may enroll in a weekend, weeklong, or combination workshop. Tuition varies according to enrollment.

"The conference is both for working writers and for people getting started on their writing. Our workshops offer intensive instruction balanced with ample free time," said Sharon Oard Warner, UNM English professor and conference director.

Seven scholarship opportunities are offered to support conference participants. They are four merit scholarships, the D.H. Lawrence Fellowship, the Taos Resident Writer Award and the new Native Writer Award. Merit scholarships are awarded in poetry and fiction and provide tuition for individual writing workshops. They do not, however, cover transportation or lodging. Interested individuals must register for the conference to be considered.

The D.H. Lawrence Fellowship is for an emerging writer with at least one book in
print. The fellowship covers tuition and lodging. Applications are due April 15.

The Taos Resident Writer Award is, as its name implies, presented to a Taos writer. Interested Taos residents can call 505-277-6248.

The new Native Writer Award was established in honor of Louis Owens, Native American writer and former UNM professor. In 2003, the award will go to a writer from Taos Pueblo.

"The conference provides an array of talented writers presenting workshops on the process of publishing, the use of landscape in poetry, magazine and memoir writing, creating great fictional characters, travel writing and more," said Oard Warner.
