The University of New Mexico Arts of Americas Institute, College of Fine Arts, will present an afternoon of performance and discussion concerning the role of arts in current world affairs, specifically the war with Iraq.

"Arts and the War: What is our Role?" will be held Friday, April 18, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Keller Hall, Center for the Arts. The event is free and open to the public.

Professor A.J. RacyThe afternoon will feature University of California at Los Angeles Professor A. J. Racy, eminent ethnomusicologist and performer of Arabic music, in addition to Souhail Kaspar, percussionist, and Rahim AlHaj, renowned Iraqi 'oud player, as well as participation from College of Fine Arts faculty and artists, including Dawn-Marie Gottlieb and Erin Libby, who will perform Middle Eastern dance.

Rahim AlHajAmong topics of discussion will be: what is the role of the artist and student of the arts in terms of mediating or addressing issues that emerge from the current conflict? Why are the arts marginalized in times of world conflict? Why does debate center primarily on political and economic issues and not concerns of conflicting cultures?
