INCARCERATION EXPERT TO SPEAK AT UNM LAW SCHOOL MAY 1

Marc Mauer, noted criminal justice reform expert, will discuss issues raised in his book "Invisible Punishment: The Collateral Consequences of Mass Imprisonment," (University of Hawaii Press, 2002) at the University of New Mexico School of Law on Thursday, May 1, at 7 p.m. in Bratton Hall, rm. 2401.

Mauer, assistant director of The Sentencing Project in Washington, D.C., since 1987, and editor of "Invisible Punishment" with Meda Chesney-Lind, will examine the far reaching affects of incarceration, including, he says, the destabilizing effect on community life, breakdown of family and unmitigated costs to taxpayers.

Mauer has directed programs on criminal justice reform for 25 years. He is also author of "Race to Incarcerate" (The New Press, 1999) a semifinalist for the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award. In addition, he is author of widely cited reports in the field of criminal justice including, "Young Black Men and the Criminal Justice System," and the "Americans Behind Bars" series, which compares international rates of incarceration.

Mauer will sign books following the talk, sponsored by the Coalition of Prison Reform Advocates, NAACP, Hispano Round Table of New Mexico and UNM National Lawyer's Guild Organization.
