UNM HISTORY PROFESSOR FARBER RECEIVES HERBERT HOOVER BOOK AWARD

The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association has announced University of New Mexico History Professor David Farber as the recipient of the 2002 Herbert Hoover Book Award.

His book, "Sloan Rules: Alfred P. Sloan and the Triumph of General Motor (University of Chicago Press), was among 51 entries considered by a committee of faculty members from Iowa colleges and universities.

The Hoover Book award is given to the best scholarly book published in a calendar year on any aspect of American history during 1914-1964, the years of President Herbert Hoover's public service. Entries are judged on the originality of thesis, rigor of research, clarity of thought and quality of writing.

The award consists of a bronze medallion struck by the United States Mint and a cash honorarium. Farber will receive the award at the association's annual banquet on Friday, May 2.
The Hoover Library Association is a nonprofit, support group for the Hoover Presidential Library-Museum and the National Historic Site in West Branch.

Farber has been a professor of history at the UNM since 1997. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1985. He is the author or editor of six books, including "Chicago 68" (1988), "The Age of Great Dreams" (1994), and "Sloan Rules" (2002). "Sloan Rules: Alfred P. Sloan and the Triumph of General Motors" will also be published in Chinese by the Democracy and Construction Publishing House in Beijing.

Farber is the recipient of several awards including an American Historical Association Congressional Fellowship, an American Council of Learned Societies Senior Fellowship, a William J. Fulbright Senior Lectureship at the University of Indonesia, and the 2002 Organization of American Historians residency in political history at Keio University in Tokyo. or Farber is currently writing a book about the Iran Hostage Crisis of 1979-1980.
