UNM FACULTY SENATE EXPRESSES SUPPORT FOR PRESIDENTIAL FINALIST CALDERA

The University of New Mexico Faculty Senate Operations Committee today said some recent reports that have been aired or published by media regarding the Faculty Senate's position on UNM presidential finalist Louis Caldera "have been misleading and out of context."

"The UNM Faculty Senate Operations Committee would like to clarify its position given the misleading and out-of- context information that has appeared in some media outlets regarding our views," the committee said in a brief statement.

"Irrespective of any past votes and endorsements made by the Faculty Senate during the Presidential Search, the Faculty Senate Operations Committee supports Vice Chancellor Caldera as a person who is uniquely qualified to lead UNM at this moment in its history. We look forward to working with him for the betterment of the university," the committee said.

Earlier this week, the UNM Board of Regents approved a resolution authorizing two Board members to engage in non-binding discussions with Louis Caldera, J.D., one of five individuals selected by the Board as finalists for the position of President of UNM.

Caldera is currently vice chancellor for University Advancement at California State University (CSU) Long Beach, Calif., where he also is president of the CSU Foundation. He also served as Secretary of the Army from 1998 to 2001 and served three terms in the California State Assembly from 1992 to 1997.
