MAGAZINE RANKS UNM AMONG "TOP 100 COLLEGES FOR HISPANICS"

The University of New Mexico is rated 16th or higher in awarding degrees to Hispanic students from bachelor to doctoral levels, as reported in Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education's May 5 issue, "Top 100 Colleges for Hispanics."

UNM is rated 13th in conferring bachelor's degrees, awarding a total of 2,548 degrees of which 746 went to Hispanics. Among Carnegie institutions, UNM is classified "doctoral extensive" and ranks 11 with a total of 23,753 students of whom 6,763 are Hispanic. UNM is ranked 16th in conferring master's degrees, awarding 1,035 with 181 going to Hispanics. Among institutions awarding doctoral degrees to Hispanics, UNM ranks 11, conferring 174 total with 20 going to Hispanics.

Specific UNM academic programs were ranked among the top 10 for awarding degrees to Hispanics; pharmacy, second; biological sciences, fifth; business and marketing, tenth; education, third; English literature, ninth; and health sciences, fifth.

Hispanic females outnumbered their male counterparts at UNM across the board. Of the 6,763 Hispanics enrolled at UNM, 4,037 were female, 2,726 were male. Of the 746 bachelor's degrees going to Hispanics, 476 were awarded to females, 270 to males. Of the 181 Hispanic master's degrees, 123 went to females, 58 to males. Of the 20
Ph.D.s, 12 went to females, 8 to males.

Statistical data was provided by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), which indicated that a total of 52,215 degrees were awarded to Hispanics, up 5,000 from the number NCES reported just two years ago.
