June 3, 2003 UNM COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENT RECEIVES AWARD OF EXCELLENCE FROM PHI KAPPA PHI University of New Mexico computer science student Breanne Duncan was
one of 30 students nationwide who received an Award of Excellence from
the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi recently. Duncan, who graduated summa
cum laude with a BS in computer science in May, will receive a $1,500
award to pursuit a Ph.D. in computer science. An Albuquerque native, Duncan was also one of 20 undergraduates nationwide
to receive honorable mention in the Computing Research Associations
Outstanding Undergraduate Award program for 2003 earlier this year.
A UNM Regents Scholarship recipient, Duncan was the class valedictorian
at Highland High School where she graduated in 1999. The Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship Program is one of the largest
and most respected scholarship programs in the country awarding more
than $460,000 annually to outstanding students for first-year graduate
study. The multidisciplinary nature of the Phi Kappa Phi is reflected in its
Fellowship and Award of Excellence recipients. Awardees represent a
variety of fields including biology, chemistry, engineering, political
science, mathematics and psychology. Likewise, the professions they
select are equally diverse including: law, medicine, business, education,
science or the arts. Each year, Phi Kappa Phi offers 52 Fellowships of up to $8,000 each and 30 awards of Excellence of $1,500 each. Every chapter has the opportunity to submit one nominee and each person nominated receives an Active-For-Life membership in the Society. More than 2,000 students have benefitted since the programs inception in 1929. # # # |
