STATEMENT FROM PRESIDENT F. CHRIS GARCIA REGARDING U.S. SUPREME COURT'S RULING ON AFFIRMATIVE ACTION
Today, the University of New Mexico joins with higher education institutions
across the country in celebrating the Supreme Court's affirming of the
Bakke decision and Justice Powell's pronouncement in that case that
student body diversity is a compelling state interest in the context
of university admissions.
UNM has never used race as a factor for its undergraduate admissions.
To the extent race is considered in admissions in graduate and professional
programs, it is one of many factors but not the determining factor.
Thus, UNM's admission practices are consistent with the policy found
constitutional today by the Supreme Court.
The importance of maintaining a diverse student body and the University of New Mexico's commitment to diversity will continue to be a central area of emphasis. We strongly believe that a diverse campus enriches us all. We are pleased that the Supreme Court has provided the clarity that higher education was seeking following the Bakke decision.
