UNM STUDENT UNION BUILDING TO "TEAR DOWN THE TENT"

The University of New Mexico Student Union Building (SUB) will be tearing down the tent Thursday, June 26, 2003, in Smith Plaza north of the Humanities Building beginning about 9 a.m.

The dismantling of the white tent--which has served the UNM campus as a food service and gathering area while the SUB has undergone reconstruction--will probably continue throughout the day.

For the past three years, UNM students, faculty and staff have made the tent, also known as the "Lobo Lair," their home away from home. The 300-person tent served as a place for dining, lounging and socializing.

Several kiosks known collectively as "The Transitional Food Village" were also put up throughout campus. The village consisted of eight locations offering food venues similar to those that were available in the previous SUB. The kiosks also will be taken away the following Friday.

Tearing down the tent precedes the opening of the newly reconstructed, $25 million Student Union Building on July 1, 2003.

Among the SUB's many amenities are interactive video conferencing, wireless networking/data ports and a multifunctional state-of-the-art theater for presentations, performances or movies, all of which make the SUB one of the most technologically advanced facilities in Albuquerque.
