RESTORED HOME OWNED BY UNM STAFF MEMBER FEATURED ON HGTV

Joe McKinneyHome and Garden Television (HGTV) features the home of UNM University Planner Joe McKinney this week on Restoring America, Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 6:00 and 9:00 p.m. on cable channel 49 in Albuquerque.

The show features McKinney, his wife Mary and their Albuquerque home which they painstakingly renovated over 18 months from late 1987 to 1989.

The Pueblo-style home known, as the Watson House, was built in the early 1940's by Leon Watson, as part of the Chacon Addition along 16th and 17th streets between Lomas and Mountain Road, NW in Albuquerque.

While the McKinney's, along with Albuquerque contractor McHenry and Co. conducted a major restoration of the residence, a majority of the original structure was kept intact. The home was rewired and re-stuccoed and a new roof replaced the original dirt-insulated construction. The home features original vigas and all the original windows.

In 1989, the Watson house earned first place in the Albuquerque Board of Realtors Historical Home Contest.

The home is listed on the New Mexico State register of historic places.

HGTV will rebroadcast Restoring America Aug. 24, 2003 at 10:30 a.m.
