August 12, 2003 CHILD CAR SEAT CHECKUP TO BE HELD AT UNM'S FAMILY HEALTH CLINIC The UNM Family Health and Internal Medicine Clinic, in collaboration with the New Mexico SAFE KIDS Coalition and Safer New Mexico Now, will host a free child safety seat checkup event on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The clinic is located at 1209 University Blvd. NE. Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 14 and under. Each year, more than 1,700 children die and another 264,000 are injured as occupants of motor vehicles. According to the National SAFE KIDS Coalition, four out of five car seats are used incorrectly. The car seat checkup is offered in an effort to educate families about the importance of properly restraining children in motor vehicles. Through this program, parents and caregivers receive hands-on instruction from certified child passenger safety technicians who will examine each child safety seat for correct use, installation and recalls. # # # |
